One summer back in the early nineties Colin and I worked on a farm in a backwater town in Italy. The farm was run by a Danish family who had moved to Italy from New Jersey. No one in the family liked the move to Italy besides the father whose idea it was. The four teenage sons missed Slayer, and the wife, Kaya, missed her tennis club. The redneck Italians in this part of Umbria did not particularly like foreigners coming to Italy to make wine and grow olives. The night before we arrived to work the family had discovered their dog dead in a field below the house, poisoned by the neighboring farmer.
The household was on edge. The children fought openly with the parents and Kaya reminisced obsessively, to anyone who would listen, about the high life back in Summit, NJ. It was pretty intense but we had all the wine we could drink and Kaya was an outstanding cook.
The family seemed to like having us around. Maybe just because we listened to their griping. And it wasn’t always
depressing. One night after dinner Lars Erik and Kaya told us the story of how they met. There was a country-dance in their hometown in Denmark. Lars Erik and Kaya arrived with different dates who over the course of the evening paired off with new, presumably less gloomy prospects. This twist of fate left Lars Erik and Kaya sitting by themselves outside the dancehall, rejected and contemplative but who knows, perhaps ready for love. You can imagine the music of young couples dancing and falling in love on a hot summer night drifting outside tempting Lars Erik and Kaya to take a chance. They soon discovered that they had suffered the same fate that evening. Out of such magic stuff is marriage made.
